Antique rococo and neo classical Mirrors

Mallett Group

This section of the website concentrates on English and European giltwood mirrors from the 18th and 19th century.

We have an outstanding collection of giltwood, Japanned and eglomise mirrors and girandoles, many with original antique mirror plates and in their original pairs. The provenance of many of our pieces is also exceptional.

Antique mirrors: beautiful reflections of the past

Antique mirrors truly are things of beauty. The wonderful craftsmanship and detailing that is put into these decorative items can be remarkable, and their fragile nature makes them even more precious.

One of the most striking things about antique mirrors is how varried the designs are. Some are exceptionally grand - several feet in height and width - and others may only be a few inches across.

Antique mirrors can also be ornate, with wide frames and intricate carving to amuse the eye. Alternatively, some antique mirrors offer a subdued simplicity.

Additionally, antique mirrors can have surfaces that are flat, convex or bevelled. The glass can be crystal clear, or darkened with age, each type providing its own distinctive character.

At Mallett, we are one of the oldest antique dealers in the world, with over 150 years of experience. Our collection of antique mirrors includes items sourced from across the UK and Europe.

Whether you're looking for antique mirrors for your own personal collection, a private home or a commercial location, with Mallett, you're sure to find something to suit your requirements.

The decorative styles of antique mirrors

When choosing to buy 18th or 19th century antique mirrors, you may want to select a piece that exemplifies a specific decorative style.

Rococo antique mirrors are ornate and often asymmetrical to give a playful feel, while neoclassical antique mirrors draw on the styles and themes of the ancient Greeks and Romans. You may also choose early Georgian or Queen Anne period antique mirrors, which generally employ symmetrical motifs and simple shapes.

There were also many different methods used in creating antique mirrors, each one achieving a distinctive look. Giltwood was a favourite choice, as it allowed for the intricate carvings popular during the 18th and 19th century to be highlighted and polished for best effect.

Japanning and eglomise were also popular techniques. Japanning involved finishing frames with a coloured lacquer in imitation of oriental lacquer, while eglomise was produced by gilding the back of glass panels, which were coloured, incised and engraved.

As well as antique mirrors, Mallett also offers Rococo and neoclassical girandoles. These highly decorative antique mirrors were mounted with candelabra to provide a stunning effect and additional reflected light at night.
