We have an unrivalled collection of English and Continetal
antique furniture, which in- cludes walnut furniture such as Queen Anne
bachelors chests, kneehole desks and sets of Georgian chairs with fine
needlework coverings from as early as 1700. Later George II and George III
chests of drawers, case furniture, side tables and occassional tables crafted
of the finest mahogany and exotic woods, are exhibited with Regency furniture
and, Victorian furniture. The history of design and adoption of external
influences such as chinoiserie, the rococo, and neo classicism, are traced
throughout the Mallett collec- tions and balanced with the continental
furniutre collection.
Many of the important and revered English furniture makers
and furniture designers of the day are also represented. Important and very
rare pieces designed by Thomas Chip- pendale, John Linnell, John Mclean, Robert
Adam, Vile & Cobb, and William Kent, of- fer some of the most beautifully
proportioned English furniture with the finest quality decorations, of inlaid
woods, carved mahogany or contrasting woods and grains.
The adoption by English furniture makers of new exotic woods
is no more prominently shown than during the late 18th century and the 19th
century. Sheraton in particular used these woods such as satinwood, rosewood,
harewood and burr woods to cre- ate highly refined neo classical designs which
were much lighter in concept than the previous designs of Georgian periods. The
19th century saw these ideas and designs abstracted further, Jackson &
Graham and Collinson & Lock, created some of the most elegant 19th century
pieces, with exceptional marquetry and play of colours and woods.
Antique giltwood furniture is also represented, some of the
most important pieces were decorated with gold leaf, which was burnished and
matted to emphasise form and beauty. We have several important 18th century
giltwood side tables and consoles, accompanied by an outstanding collection of
giltwood mirrors, many with original an- tique mirror plates. The provenance of
many of our pieces is also exceptional, we have pieces from Kedleston Hall,
Tabley Hall, Hackwood Park and Harewood House and several pieces are related to
furnishings represented in the Royal Collections.
