Antique rococo mirrors made during the mid eighteenth century rococo period often feature lightly-drawn scrolling carving on their frames. A number of traits indicate whether a mirror dates back to around 1760 - the height of the Chippendale rococo period.
"Lightly-drawn scrolling around an outer frame, decorated with naturalistically-carved acanthus leaves is typical of the middle period of the rococo taste for giltwood mirrors," *
And another indicator of this era is the use of a crest and boldly-carved flowerheads that flank the main mirror plate.
These would cover the joins in the border mirror glasses and cabinet makers tended to favour such mirror frames, as they assisted with the overall appearance of the mirrors.

The antique rococo mirror is attributed to Thomas Johnson and includes an oval frame with scrolling foliage and an elaborate cresting, as well as a superbly carved and pierced apron.
