A pair of Eibar Gothic candlesticks An outstanding pair of late 19th century blued steel and gilt Eibar Gothic damascened candlesticks. The Gothic traceries are finely chased and achieved in low relief against a background of faux block work. Each signed on the base TEODORO YBARZABAL EIBAR.
This exceptional pair of highly crafted candlesticks belong to a school of Eibar damasceners amongst whom the Zuloagas are the most famous. The tradition for damascening goes back to the medieval era, however a revival of this work in the mid 19th Century brought it to its most technically accomplished moment. Signed pieces are exceptionally rare and the only other example of Teodoro Ybarzabal's work is a revolver and accessories in the Khalili Collection illustrated in "The Art and Tradition of the Zuloagas", V&A, London, 1997, page 36. In the catalogue it quotes: "While the damascener Ibarzábal is not listed amongst Plácido's disciples, he is obviously one of the earliest exponents of the Zuloaga school, working perhaps in the days when Eusebio still dominated Eibar's nascent damascening industry."
